As an American looking at the "Balloons of Bhutan," a story about a unique G.D.P. Instead of "Gross National Product" the Bhutan celebrate their invented "Gross National Happiness" and have done so since 1972. The interactive version of this project by Jonathan Harris is stunningly! It portrays the Balloons of Bhutan as a story of happiness in the last Himalayan kingdom.

Harris asked each person five questions:

What makes you happy?
What is your happiest memory?
What is your favorite joke?
What is your level of happiness between 1 and 10?
+ your one wish?

Based on each levels of happiness Harris inflated corresponding number of balloons. On a balloon of their favorite color Harris wrote their wishes. 117 different people = 117 wish balloons.

On 11.11.11 ~ my wish for you is to create yourr own amazing very colorful, happy experience, share it and to view this interactive one ~ The Balloons of Bhutan Stories. Not a Boundary, one of the winning videos from 2010 Young people between the ages of 9 and 25 are invited to submit short videos of one to five minutes in length. The videos should express participants’ experiences and thoughts on migration, diversity, social inclusion and identity; highlighting realities as well as ideas for peaceful relations among diverse cultures and religions.
PLURAL+ supports youth engagement in these important issues, both at local and global levels, by facilitating video distribution through a variety of media platforms and networks (broadcast, festivals, conferences, events, Internet, and DVD).

LAS CRUCES, according to Planning Board President John Muir, New Mexico says the need for technical job training for veterans has been well established and this program will train veterans to be useful in a variety of areas regarding film making in the state. With such training veterans will be in a better position to express and tell their own stories and experiences. Yet another great use for New Mexico's film incentives ~ to help vets tell their story.

Here's a unique way to collect stories right in your own community. Check out what The HIV Story Project does. They put together a multi-platform storytelling | media endeavor and short film compilation about living with HIV/AIDS. Working with local non-profit social service organizations these filmmakers participate with largest cross-agency and cross-disciplinary efforts around the HIV/AIDS cause. Based in San Francisco, their storytelling platform promotes interaction with online communities around the globe.

On a closer look the The HIV Story Project is built on four key participation components:

Component # 2 – Media Production for San Francisco/Bay Area HIV/AIDS Non-Profits
Component #3 – Story Telling Booth & Public Installation

Future Voices of New Mexico is a collaborative filmmaking project that takes inspiration from the ALL ROADS FILM PROJECT of the National Geographic Society, which works with indigenous and under-represented voices from around the world. By bringing together teachers, filmmakers and various cultural institutions we have launched a project the encourages high school students from around the state of New Mexico to tell stories through film and photography. Utilizing local filmmakers, we have created filmmaking modules that are brought into the schools.

At BAVC's Factory Youth Production Collective YOUTH learn to, create and produce their own STORIES! Check out these YOUTH VIDEOS.

"The Factory is BAVC's advanced video production collective for motivated youth, ages 15-19 in the Bay Area. In this collaborative program, Factory Producers create professional-quality short films, music videos, and public service announcements. The program emphasizes creative and political expression through a strong visual style. Participants develop their skills as videographer, director, and editor. Youth are encouraged to explore issues important to them through fiction, documentary, and video art. Completed projects are distributed to film festivals, contests, and for broadcast."

The Factory will hold its year-end screening on Tuesday, August 24th at the Pacific Film Artchive on the UC-Berkeley campus. The event will feature the collected work from the past school year and summer: more than dozen documentary, narrative and experimental films, many of which have already screened around the country.

Spoken Word is Storytelling

The film Spoken Word was conceived of by spoken-word artist and filmmaker Joe Ray Sandoval who started with a notion of a story – a poet who comes home because his father is dying. A prodigal poet son.

The narrative lens of the film offers Northern New Mexico as a character. When the New Mexican poet moves away, he took not only the words inside himself, but also the vivid saturated memories in his dreamscape flashbacks that morph into his spoken-word poetry. As the film begins Cruz Montoya (played by Kuno Becker) is a spoken-word poet mentoring youth in the San Francisco | Oakland Bay Area until a single phone call quietly informs him of his Father's illness drawing him back home only to find out he can go home and it is still exactly what home used to be except sometimes it is worse.

The beautiful real landscapes and authentic depiction of the the Northern New Mexico village of Chimayó is the places of the main character's resonant family miliue. Not to spoil the plot, the main character Cruz begins to lose his ability to spin verse after descending into old bad habits back home. Hitting bottom Cruz begins to reconcile his past, his relationships, especially with his Father (played by amazing Rubén Blades, MR. Milagro Bean Field War). As the story unfolds what were unspoken words in his family become spoken words scene by scene via conversations and realized wordsmithing. From scribbled notebook pages to dreamscapes to flashbacks, words dissolve into the past and present images of Cruz's life. The autobiographical poetry from Joe Ray Sandoval, Enrique Aviles and Cor van den Heuvel add to the deep story texture of the narrative.

After the public screening in Santa Fe, New Mexico Joe Ray Sandoval, spoken-word artist and filmmaker, proclaimed "Art saved my life!" "When I turned forty I learned you can do anything if you just get out of your own way." The audience breathed a sign of relief when Sandoval acknowledged his Father, a teacher, was alive and well in the audience as were many members of his family, friends and community. Sandoval stepped up to acknowledging he wants to get back to working with youth again. "Art is an option! Youth need to know this." "My whole family is in conversation and talking about things we might not have talked about five or or even three years ago." Our stories are embedded in all of our conversations, so Sandoval is right when he says, "Go out there and have a conversation that is difficult to have." We are all better for it and for this authentic storytelling.

Abiquiu Digital Storytelling Workshop #4

As a group we created a Story Map, examined the storyboards of amazing artists and as a group we created a storyboard integrating both story continuity as well as the camera moves we've been practicing as part of our Storyboard Language Literacy.

Intergenerational participants used both individual storyboard sheets and group methods to create story.

Students enjoyed the multi-camera angle language storyboard from movie examples. They reasoned with each other rationale for approaches to representing a scene.

Listening to and watching Grandmother oral histories online, participants shared stories oftheir relatives.

We worked on paper, on chalkboard together creating collaborative stories. Web based Storyboarding, Filmmaking Tools & Apps we are playing with:

PrimaryAccess Stoyboard ~ PrimaryAccess is a suite of free online tools that allows students and teachers to use primary source documents to complete meaningful and compelling learning activities with digital movies, storyboards, rebus stories and other online tools.
PrimaryAccess MovieMaker ~ enables you to combine text, audio and images into compelling personal narratives and digital stories, with a simple movie-making process. Steps like scripting, recording and saving are entirely Web-based--no software to install--and the movies are easy to retrieve and share.
PrimaryAccess Rebusu ~ makes it easy to create a Rebus using primary source documents. A Rebus (Latin for ’by things”) is a written story that uses pictures as parts of the text. Explore primary sources by creating crops of those sources and using them to tell a story. Choose digital images from archive such as the Library of Congress. Migrate your rebus into MovieMaker and make them into a movie.
We also use Adobe Premiere Pro or Apple iMovie, Final Cut Express & Final Cut Pro.

The 2010 Digital Storytelling Workshop at The Pueblo de Abiquiu Library and Cultural Center began with story sharing moving into Story Maps. Participants mapped out a story for the group then pitched their story.

Watching short online documentaries, students practiced mapping out story elements. After viewing the beginning of Our Lady of Tamale, a KQED Truly CA short by Cecil B. Feeder, students collaborated on mapping this rockumentary about the Tamale Lady and the folks who love her and her tamales.

Connections Between 1999 and 2009

In 1999 Convivial moved to a one acre piece of land originally part of a Spanish land grant parcel. The new pink adobe Convivial Studio is about a fifth of the size of our San Francisco studio. Also on the property is an original three room adobe building over a hundred years old and used initially as a place to store hay as part of an adjacent property and its alfalfa field. The structure of the casa, which used to be an adobe barn, and a portion of the land surrounding it, was parceled out and sold long ago to one of the first Abiquiu elementary school teachers. The teacher had a kitchen, dining area and a bedroom. For a long time she had an outhouse next to her adobe, until she built an indoor bathroom and brought plumbing indoors.

Years go then by Mahbouba, an Afghanistan refugee woman, purchased the same old adobe as is. Mahbouba raised three children in this mud casa. Mahbouba added a large adobe oblong-shaped living room to the house. She put in skylights where on many occasions we and guests at our house view the clear night stars. Mahbouba was an exporter of goods. On one of her trips she brought back blue and green, yellowish arch shaped windows and doors from Morocco. They are the window and door from the original adobe house to the new living room, and the windows from the living room to the outside world. The colored light they give, especially in the summer months is quite soothing. The floor of her living room is also pure mud treated with linseed oil. The variety of floors of the house make up a quilted pattern of mud, bricks, rocks and flagstone mixed with cement.

Then today, as I follow Sundance Film Festival events, I read about a premiere screening of Afghan Star. Afghan Star is a documentary about a TV show similar to many featured in America today. Havana Marking, director of Afghan Star, says, "The narrative structure of my documentary, following the contestants and producers from the regional auditions to the finals in Kabul, was clear from the start, but events unfolded to make it a modern-day thriller. When one woman danced on stage all hell broke loose: both her life and the future of the show was threatened. Their futures in turn came to symbolize that of the fragile nation itself."

Thinking of Mahbouba, who made the trek from Afghanistan to New Mexico selling her wares at the Santa Fe Flea Market decades ago, as an opaque background to Havana Marking, who completed her documentary with a bodyguard and often no electricity, the premiering an Afghan movie tomorrow at Sundance, full circles and connections revealed over time.
